Two great ways to advocate are contacting elected officials and writing Letters to The Editor to educate the public about public education issues.
Email your Legislator
Legislators represent you and your community. Knowing who your elected officials are will enable you to reach out and share your ideas and opinions with people who make our state’s laws. The North Carolina General Assembly website has information on how you can contact your house representative or senator. Each member’s page contains contact information, member committee assignments, and member employment information. If you’re not sure who represents you, you can find your legislators on the site. If you prefer to contact a legislator by phone, you can call 919-733-4111 and request to speak to a member of the General Assembly.
Write a Letter to the Editor
One effective way to keep an issue before your community is to write a letter to the editor (LTE) of your local newspaper or blog. You should also send copies of the letter to your elected officials. There are many newspapers published daily and weekly in North Carolina that will take your letters.
To make it easy for you, we’ve created lists in an Excel document to allow you to sort by a variety of variables to help you find your local newspapers. The media list spreadsheet has tabs for Daily Newspapers, Black and Latinx Media, College News, Radio/TV stations, News Services, Magazines, Selected National News, and Digital News.
