The budget should have provided better salary increases and eliminated voucher expansion! I am writing to ask to show my opposition to the new budget that fails to provide adequate funding for public schools, shortchanges teachers, and subverts millions of dollars from public schools to pay for vouchers to mostly religious public schools. The salary increases in the current budget will only serve to drive more teachers out of the profession and will ensure that the teacher pipeline continues to shrink. The 2023 Appropriations Act fails to provide for the educational future of our children and our state. At the same time, it expands vouchers for discriminatory private schools. We know from other states that most voucher recipients will be those who already send their children to private school. Can North Carolina really afford to add a private school subsidy for the wealthy while depriving the public of adequately funded public schools? North Carolinians deserve a budget that works for all people and prioritizes fulfilling the state’s constitutional obligations to provide for a uniform system of education that accepts all students. Funding a second, unaccountable, private education system in North Carolina is taking our state backwards and creates a situation that will reduce enrollment in local communities requiring that public schools have to be closed down. Imagine how easy it would be for a charter school to end their programs or private schools to change acceptance policies which could leave children without an option for schooling. What chaos! I believe this new budget fails to provide educators with better wages, leaving them earning less due to inflation and expands funding for unaccountable private school vouchers resulting in undermining our public schools. Our future depends on legislators like you to do the right thing for all students and families. What will happen if we destroy our public school system? Don’t let this happen on your watch. Your actions will impact your district and the entire state. If you voted YES to the budget, consider how your actions undermine our teacher pipeline and destroy public school enrollment. How will you explain this to your school board, your students and their families, your board of commissioners, and your voters?
