Stop HB32 and SB671 Petition

Dear Legislators, I am writing today to ask you not to support HB32 or SB671 which significantly expands the voucher program. This is on top of the already billions of dollars allocated to the current voucher program. Just last year, the legislature changed the voucher program making more families eligible (families earning up to 278% of the federal poverty level - $72,705 for a family of four would qualify), increased the funding for the program (slated to increase from $75 million in FY 2020-21 to $145 million in FY 2027-28) and expanded charter schools. The impact of these voucher program changes are significant and do not serve to strengthen and support our public schools. Instead, they threaten our public schools at a time when our schools are desperate for funding and our legislators face the court-ordered funding needs of Leandro. This is the wrong way to lift up our educators and students as we deal with COVID and an economic downturn. We need public schools that give students a well-rounded curriculum including the arts, staffed by well-paid educators and sufficient numbers of nurses, school psychologists, social workers and school counselors to help our students stay safe and on track to graduate and begin a career or college. Please protect the promise documented in our state’s constitution: A sound and basic, high-quality public education, free and open to all students. Please stop the privatization of our schools and the diverting of public dollars to private schools. Please vote no on HB32 and SB671. Thank you for your consideration.
