Two bills have recently been introduced to arm our public school teachers with guns.
We join most of North Carolina’s 110,000 educators in opposing arming educators.
Join us Wednesday, March 13th from 7 PM to 8 PM for a TWEET STORM! Our elected representatives need to know how seriously we take the safety of our schools, students and teachers. Arming teachers with guns will NOT make our students safer. Our teachers need resources, not guns. Our schools need counselors, social workers, school psychologists and nurses, not armed teachers.
Be ready to join us and our partners as we rain tweets on our reps!
We’ll be using the following hashtags to send a clear message that we will oppose any bill intending to ask or require our teachers to carry guns.
- #SchoolSafety
- #BooksNotGuns
- #ResourcesNotGuns
- #ArmMeWith

SIGN OUR PETITION
You can advocate for ways to reduce risks posed to our school children. Keeping guns off school property ensures a safer and more supportive learning environment for our children but we also need more helping professionals, more restorative justice programs, and other constructive ways to improve school safety. Let’s ask for common sense, effective solutions that work. Click Here to Sign the Petition!
DETAILS
Senate Bill 192, The School Security Act of 2019, would give teachers a 5 percent raise to become sworn police officers. The teachers could carry concealed weapons in their classrooms and would have arrest powers under the proposal.
House Bill 216, The School Self-Defense Act, would make it legal for teachers and staff members to carry concealed handguns on school grounds “to respond to acts of violence or imminent threats of violence.”
Remember to @ your members and legislative leaders, and consider using the following tweets, or your own variations, with the proper hashtags in place. (Take care not to draft tweets longer than 130 characters so that you’ll have room for hashtags.)
