Trick or Treat: What’s on Your Ballot?

Election Day is Tuesday, November 3rd.

If you need any information on how or where to vote, go to the NC Board of Elections website. Public education voters must be informed about the Tricks and Treats on the ballot!

Constitutional amendments are a Trick! There are two tax-related amendments on the ballot. One creates a flat 3.5% income tax cap for our state. About 50% of state revenue currently comes from income taxes. This pays for K-12 public education, community college, universities, health and human services, prisons, and most of the state’s other core functions. If state revenues are cut, these services will be reduced or eliminated. Economic and tax experts estimate this cap could cost NC $17 Billion per year and force lawmakers to use regressive taxes (sales taxes and fees) to fund essential services.

Don’t be tricked into voting for an amendment that helps corporations and the wealthy and chokes out funding for essential public goods and services!

Another amendment limits local control over property taxes. The Trick here is taking local taxing authority away from local leaders and voters—who know their communities best—and giving it to state lawmakers. If this amendment passes, the primary winners will be large property owners, corporations, and real estate developers. Local property taxes pay for local services like EMS, fire and rescue, libraries, parks and greenways, and public school needs not provided by the state.

Don’t be tricked into turning local control over to the legislature and putting local services at risk!

Pro-public education candidates are the Treat on your ballot! Voters have opportunities up and down the ballot to vote for candidates that will support public schools. Who we elect for Congress, the NC Supreme Court, NC House and Senate, school board and county commission determines whether or not we return our state to being a leader in public education.

If you haven’t voted and need help knowing where candidates stand on the issues, you can check out our  Public Education Position Questionnaire.

Electing leaders at all levels of government that will use their votes to support North Carolina’s public schools is a Treat our students, educators, and communities deserve!

Remember: Constitutional Amendments are a TRICK! Public Schools First NC encourages everyone to vote AGAINST all three amendments.
