Inclusiveness

Public schools are open to all children regardless of ability, family resources or LGBTQ+ status. Thus, it’s critical that public schools are welcoming, safe spaces for all children. Districts and administrators can support inclusive schools and classrooms by supporting educators’ understanding of the many ways children show up. Professional development, resources and coaching must be part of inclusive public schools. Students must be exposed to culturally diverse classroom materials and experiences. They should see themselves represented in curriculum and books in classroom and school libraries. When children feel safe and welcome in their schools, they’re able to focus more on academics and learning. When they experience a culture of inclusivity, they develop better communication and collaborative skills as well as empathy and understanding of others.
