Join us to learn more about NC’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) policies and the NC Pre-K program with our guests: Elizabeth Byrum, Policy Analyst with NC Child, and Dawn Dawson, Senior Director, Office of Early Learning, Wake County Public Schools. These knowledge experts will provide us with a general overview of ECE policy in NC along with an in-depth review of the NC Pre-K program including funding information, data, and a close look at how one school system is providing these services. We will have time for a discussion with all participants about the barriers to increasing the number of children who can benefit from these valuable programs.
These days, any conversation about early childhood education features plenty of evidence of the many short and long-term benefits of high-quality programs. A recent program, “Building a Universal System for Families with Young Children in North Carolina” hosted at Duke University and attended by early childhood funders, advocates, policymakers, and researchers was no different.
Economists agree: Early childhood investment in high-quality programs is a smart investment. Perhaps James Heckman, Distinguished Professor of Economics at The University of Chicago and a Nobel Laureate in Economics stated it best in his paper’s title, “Invest in Early Childhood Development: Reduce Deficits, Strengthen the Economy.” His research found that the return on investment of quality early childhood programs is 7%-10% annually. That’s hard to beat financially. When the moral imperative to provide quality care to our children is added to the many educational and social benefits, it’s hard to imagine why anyone wouldn’t want to invest generously in early childhood education.
